What we keep behind the counter

Sec. 01

Three things, honestly. We're not a big-box aisle and we've never pretended to be. Everything here is what somebody going out this morning actually needs.

Live Bait

Market price, daily

Anchovies and sardines in the aerated tank when the boats bring them in. Squid, ghost shrimp and mudsuckers depending on the season. Frozen backup in the chest freezer when the live runs out — and it does run out, usually by nine on a good weekend.

  • Tank checked before we unlock the door
  • Ice and styrofoam boxes on the floor
  • Call ahead if you need a big scoop

Rods & Tackle

Ask at the counter

Surf rods, pier sticks, boat rods and light bay setups. Reels we'd use ourselves and can service. Line, leader, hooks, weights, jigs, hoop nets and crab gear — plus the small stuff you forgot until you were already in the parking lot.

  • Spooling while you wait
  • Rigs tied for the spot you're headed
  • Licenses — we'll point you right

Tide Advice

Free — always has been

The real reason to come in. What the water's doing, where the swell is wrapping, whether the entrance is worth it this morning, and what people have been bringing back. Fifty-one years of it. Nobody's ever paid a dollar for it and nobody's going to start.

  • Board rewritten every morning
  • Straight answers, including “stay home today”
  • Free on the phone too

Sec. 02 · Morro Bay entrance

This is the sheet that lives taped to the counter, photocopied soft and marked up in ballpoint. It's a reference, not a promise — the entrance has its own opinions and so does the fog. What matters is the swing: how much water is moving and which way.

Exact heights and times shift daily and we don't publish numbers we can't stand behind. Call the shop the morning you're going out — that's the honest version, and it's free.

Why people keep coming back

Sec. 03

Fifty-one years, one harbor

Opened in 1974 and we've been watching the same water ever since. We've seen the sardines come and go, the entrance shoal up and scour out, and enough weather to know when a forecast is lying to you.

Advice that includes “no”

If the bar is breaking or the wind's coming up at ten, we'll tell you. We'd rather lose a bait sale than have somebody out there wishing they'd asked. That's the whole business, really.

Local and visiting, same answer

Deckhands, weekend surf guys, and families who've never held a rod all get the same rundown. If you're new to the Central Coast, tell us — we'll start at the pier and work up from there.

The shop phone

805-555-0122

Ring it. Somebody standing near the bait tank will pick up and tell you what the water's doing and what's been coming over the rail. No menu, no hold music.
