The Shop

The dad opened it in 2009. There's a Polaroid of him on the wall, standing outside this same door, squinting into the same afternoon light that still comes in low and orange around four o'clock and lands on the mirror wall. His son runs the shop now — second generation, same block, same phone number.

The chair arms are nickel, polished bright right where fifteen years of elbows have rested, and the oxblood seats are cracked into a map you could read. The black-and-white floor tile has one chipped corner and it stays. The licenses on the wall have gone yellow. There's a paper calendar from the tire shop down the street and nobody's taking that down either.

You'll hear a Spanish-language station at half volume, the strop, the door chime, and a chess piece coming down hard on wood. Somebody will nod at you. Somebody will say your name out loud when it's your turn. That's the whole business.

The Corner Table

Two old heads have been playing in the corner since the shop opened. The clock is analog and it is usually running. Sit on the bench and watch — most people do. Nobody has ever been rushed out of that corner, and nobody's going to be.
